My Photograph of Bola Agbaje in the Guardian

I am very pleased to see my photograph printed in a lead article of the Guardian's G2 magazine. I took this portrait of Bola Agbaje on the last day of my work experience. I was only given fifteen minutes to complete the assignment at the London Royal Court Theatre. Thankfully Bola was a great person to work with,  open minded and willing to try different things in the short time we had together. We shot against different backgrounds and this picture was one of the last I took.

Sisters of Sclerder on the Book Arts Fayre 6 in Cardiff

Exhibitions and Events of 2011

2011 was rather eventful for me and before the hopefully even more successful 2012 really begins I thought it would be a good idea to make an account of the achievements of the past year.

   This photograph was taken in November on the Guardian Student Media Awards were I was runner up in the Student Photographer of the Year category. The prize was given by David Levene and Susanna Reid. For this competition I have entered three photographs from the Sisters of Sclerder series.    The South West Graduate Photography Prize 2011 Show opened on the 7th of October in The Create Place in London.  It was a lovely event and was very inspiring to meet all the nominated graduates and to see the amazing works.  As a result Millennium Images have chosen two of my images into their online graduate gallery.

I also have been named as the winner of the award and won a residency with Fotonow.

One of my  photographs (Sister Ann and her jigsaw) was selected into the Foto8 Summer Show in Host Gallery in August. It felt like a great achievement and was great to see my photograph among many great works. Sister Ann has got a really good place at eye level right in the middle of a wall front of the entrance. I really liked the floor to ceiling display and it was interesting to see that in this "chaos" she was still able to reflect her piece and quiet.

I was shortlisted for the Student Street Photography Award 2011 and from the finalists' works there was an exhibition in the Orange Dot Gallery in July. It is always good to get recognition and of course to see your work on a wall. It was a privilege to be part of the first London Street Photography Festival. Sisters of Sclerder on the Hung degree show in Bristol. It was a hard work and was great to see the whole project, photographs, book and audio complimenting each other on the exhibition. 

 

Millennium Images

Two of my photographs has been added to the Millennium Images Graduate 2011 Gallery.  Millennium Images saw my work during the exhibition of the South West Graduate Photography Prize 2011 and I am very pleased that they have chosen two of my photographs to be included in their gallery.

Invitation for the South West Graduate Photography Prize 2011

Come along for the opening of the exhibition of the South West Graduate Photography Prize 2011. The exhibition will showcase the work of the six short listed graduates Luke Archer, Emma Walker, Rugile Zukaite, Fabio Blaser, Luise Little and myself.

Guardian Student Media Awards and the South West Graduate Photography Prize

I just have got the amazing news that I have been short listed for the "Photographer of the Year" in the Guardian Student Media Awards 2011. The winners will be announced on a formal ceremony on the 26th of November.

I also have been chosen to be one of the six graduates who will represent the South West Graduate Photography Prize this year. We will have a group exhibition at Create Place in London during October and the overall winner will be announced there.

Sisters of Sclerder

"Sisters of Sclerder" is a photography project bringing together my long- term interest in every day life and spirituality. During this project I worked closely with the Sisters of a Carmelite Monastery in Cornwall. The Carmelite order is one of the oldest and strictest among the female contemplative orders. Sclerder Abbey is an enclosed monastery where outsiders are allowed only on rare occasions. Apart from the two recreation times the sisters spend their day in prayer and working in silence, only talking when it is necessary.

My work explores monastic life as an alternative way of living at the beginning of the 21st century in Britain. As our contemporary society is driven by materialism and is ever more homogenised, it is increasingly challenging to find alternative, more spiritual lifestyles. The Nuns take vows of obedience, poverty and chastity and dedicate their life to live in unity with God and to pray for the world. As a community their simple but strict lifestyle allows them to seek harmony and happiness.

As a photographer I was aiming to be non judgmental and my project reflects my personal view of how I saw the Sisters and their life during my visits.
